 The
ruins of the Franciscan church and monastery- no more than a tower and a wall
dating from the late 13th century-are almost in the exact geographical centre
of the Island. The former Dominican convent lies to the northeast of the Franciscan
church and monastery. Its most famous resident was the daughter of King Béla
IV, Szent Margit. As the story goes, the king promised to commit his daughter
to a life of devotion in a nunnery if the Mongols were driven from the land.
The octagonal water tower rises 66 m above the open-air theatre, which is used
for opera, plays and concerts in summer. The tower now houses the Lookout Gallery,
with exhibitions of interesting folk craft and cotemporary art on the ground
floor.
